Obituary:

Marcus Melvin Hertz, age 88 of St Paul, died March 6, 2011 on the 67th anniversary of his marriage to Lorraine Blumenfeld, who was at his side at his death. Hertz was born in St. Paul, son of Aaron & Sadie Hertz. He owned a series of businesses throughout his life, including a baby store, a furniture factory, a wood products company, and in his latter years a cable tie distribution business. He was always appreciated for being industrious, innovative and dedicated to his customers. Hertz enlisted in the Air Force in World War II, as a Jewish American willing to risk his life in the campaign to defeat Nazi Germany. After eleven successful missions his plane was shot down over Germany; he survived parachuting out of a burning plane and spent ten months in a prison-of-war camp. Liberated by General Patton in 1945, he was proud to be a survivor and not a victim, and was eager to tell his heroic story. Upon his return he and Lorraine made a home in St. Paul for more than sixty-five years, with a loving generosity of spirit and dedication to their family and community.

He is survived by his wife Lorraine; sister Ann Post; brother Erwin; children Robert (Carla Throckmorton), Deborah (Martin Bunzl), Frederick (Randolph Langenbach); grandchildren Tristan, Jason, and Michael Hertz, and Noah and Zola Hertz-Bunzl.
